Parramatta Marist Old Boys Union Scholarship Fund Inc
ABN 39 739 941 600
In 2020 Australia’s oldest Catholic school, Parramatta Marist, will be celebrating the bicentenary of its foundation by George Morley. Additionally, 2020 will mark 145 years of stewardship by the Marist Brothers. In looking to jointly commemorate these significant milestones, we are conscious of continuing to fulfill our threefold aims as an alumni association as contained within our constitution:
- To maintain contact between the Old Boys of Parramatta Marist High School
- To promote and foster the interest of the Old Boys in the school
- To promote and foster the welfare of the school and its students
ATO Deductible Gift Recipient Endorsement
In light of this, we were pleased that the Parramatta Marist Old Boys Union Scholarship Fund Inc. received endorsement from the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR). Consequently, individual donations over $2 that have been made to the Scholarship Fund since 8 January 2016 (and subsequent to this date) are now tax deductible.
To comply with the requirements of being a registered charity and endorsed Deductible Gift Recipient, the Parramatta Marist Old Boys Union Scholarship Fund Inc. functions as an independent legal entity under the auspices of the Parramatta Marist Old Boys Union. Moreover, the Scholarship Fund is subject to an annual audit conducted by an independent ASIC registered company auditor to ensure compliance of the fund with the requirements of the Australian Tax Office (ATO), the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC), and the Charitable Fundraising Act 1991 (NSW Fair Trading), (Charitable Fund Raising Authority CFN/24147). The status of the Scholarship Fund can be verified by checking its ABN 39 739 941 600 at the Australian Business Register www.abr.business.gov.au
The Objectives of the Old Boys' Union Scholarship Fund
The Scholarship Fund is not only a way to fulfill our stated aims and support our alma mater in a meaningful way, but it is also a practical way of living the Marist Charism. We will continue to rely on funds raised for the Scholarship Fund through the auction at the Annual Old Boys Annual Reunion Dinner (This year 21 October 2016). However, the overarching objective is to increase the range of scholarships on offer as well increasing the effectiveness of each donation from the potential benefactors within our OBU community.
Tax deductibility status increases the effectiveness of donations because a $100 donation consists of an after tax contribution from the Old Boy of $61 and an effective contribution of $39 from the Australian Government. (Based upon 2015-2016 tax rates and a taxable income $80,001 to $180,000 by way of example only). The effective contributions will vary with different marginal tax rates.
The purposes of the Scholarship Fund are restricted to jointly raising and administering funds to be provided to eligible scholarship recipients. Whilst anyone is eligible to apply, the scholarships are solely for the purposes of promoting the recipient’s education by providing funds to meet costs that are directly related to their education at Parramatta Marist High School. Such costs may include (but are not limited to) textbooks, camps, retreats, uniform, equipment (e.g. iPads) as well as school incursions and excursions. The only criteria for the award of scholarships are merit, for reasons of equity, or a combination of both [Paragraph 4(7) of the OBU Scholarship Fund Inc. Constitution].
In accordance with the Scholarship rules, scholarship funds are paid to or at the direction of, the recipient’s parents or guardians subject to all expenditure being substantiated.
Ultimately, we wish to ensure that every student who attends our great school has an experience equal to that of their peers, and they know they are part of a wider community whose alumni care deeply about them as one of its future members.Read some testimonials from Old Boys about how Parramatta Marist provided the foundations for their future.
Moreover, a strong, independent, and well-resourced Old Boys Union (including the Scholarship Fund) will be vital in ensuring the proud legacy of this country's oldest Catholic school continues well into its third century; and, our alumni association continues to grow as we approach our second century.

The Parramatta Marist Old Boys Union, formed in 1925, and the newly established Parramatta Marist Old Boys Union Scholarship Fund Inc. (together and severally referred to as the OBU) are entities governed by their own constitutions, and are therefore independent of both Parramatta Marist High School (PMH) and the Catholic Education Diocese, Parramatta (CEDP) in their organisation, finances, scholarships funds, and governance. At the same time, neither PMH nor the CEDP are legally liable for the actions and decisions of the OBU. However, while independent, the OBU seeks to work in collaboration with alumni, the school community, the Principal of the day and their Executive, to fulfill their aims (as stated above in their respective constitutions).
